The Department of Art History was the first department to begin education at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, under the name of the Department of Archeology and Art History, in the academic year 1993-1994. With the separation of the Departments of Archaeology and Art History in 1997, our department began to provide education as the Department of Art History. Our department, which has started to enroll undergraduate students regularly every year since this date, has been enrolling 45 students in formal education every year since 2002.

Since 1997, the Art History Department of the Institute of Social Sciences of Onsekiz Mart University has enrolled a certain number of graduate students each semester, and in 2002, with the opening of the doctoral program by the Higher Education Council, it has begun to educate doctoral students.

Our goal in the Department of Art History is to provide our students with an effective view of art by conducting art history education in a broad scientific range, educating researchers who can be useful in preserving and evaluating works of art, and educating individuals who are aware of our country's art values and have an understanding of evaluating them in all areas. Furthermore, through courses that provide basic information about Turkish, Turkish-Islamic, Christian, Ancient, and World Arts in education and training, the Department of Art History aims to recognize both Turkish Culture and Art and Western Art, which form the foundation of Contemporary World Culture and Art.

Our students receive a four-year education from the Department of Art History. Students are exposed to examples of architecture, ornament, crafts, painting, and sculpture during their education in courses covering Islam, Early Christian-Byzantine, Seljuk, Principality Period, Ottoman, Westernization Period, and Modern Arts, beginning with Pre-Islamic Turkish Art, and our students prepare seminars in these courses to strengthen their development in a positive way. Afterwards, there are courses in our department that cover art theories, terminology, technical drawing-surveying, method, restoration-conservation issues, and museology.

Our students who are eligible for a four-year bachelor's degree are awarded the title of "Art Historian" at the end of this educational process.

Graduates of our department with a bachelor's degree may find employment in public institutions and organizations, including the Turkish Republic's Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the General Directorate of Monuments and Museums, Archaeological and Ethnographic Museums, Public Works projects, private museums, various local government units, our universities as academicians, the teaching profession through formation training, and many other institutions and they may improve their chances with postgraduate diplomas.

Our students, who participate in the program aimed at achieving international standards of education quality under the direction of our esteemed academicians who are experts in the field of Art History, conduct various research, seek the opportunity to work in collaboration with European universities with which our university is affiliated, and study as art historians equipped with modern knowledge by performing original theses. Laboratory, field, and excavation studies, as well as archaeological work on archaeological artifacts, provide experience for our students, and all faculty members do everything possible to ensure our students' participation in research. Throughout this sense, our students gain experience in the science of art history by participating in research projects and excavation teams on both a national and international scale.

As the Department of Art History of Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, our will to prepare our students for the future through qualified studies and research, equipping them with modern knowledge, and ensuring their participation in domestic and international studies.
